Based on the entry of existing deep geothermal borehole data and their processing in a geodatabase, a re-evaluation of the deep geothermal potential in the Free State of Saxony was performed within a research and development project (FuE) of the local government. The purpose was to create a recent and practicable base for middle-term expected deep geothermal projects. For this purpose a model-based prognosis of the temperature field was performed by processing all database recorded data. Due to a limited data extent, a geological based model was necessary including existing data sets (e.g. digital geologic map, digital terrain model, digital surface temperature distribution, and geophysical data). The assessment of technical potential of geothermal use was performed for deep borehole heat exchangers (BHE) by computer-based simulation of the performance of deep BHEs in respect to heat and electric power. In consideration of the simulation results and first estimations for other kinds of heat extracting technologies (petro- and hydrothermal use), the perspectives of geothermal use in Saxony are discussed.
