This paper presents the development of a process to produce (Cr1-x,Alx)N coatings. Low-temperature processes below the tempering temperature of 100Cr6 were developed for component coating. The maximum aluminium content is limited in conventional MSIP-PVD processes (Magnetron Sputter Ion Plating). These limits can be extended greatly with the aid of the latest pulse technology. Results of tests with (Cr1-x,Alx)N-coatings with a varying Al-content, which are used to describe the tribological behaviour, will be presented. The morphology and phase structure as well as hardness, modulus of elasticity, coating adhesion and friction values compared to 10OCr6 were investigated in a Ball-on-Disc test. Initial component coatings display excellent results in a scuffing test with gears of 20MnCr5E.
