A new ASTM International standard, developed by Subcommittee C16.40 on Insulation Systems, for fabrication of Cellular Glass Pipe and Tubing Insulation, covers techniques for fabricating cellular glass blocks into billets which are then used to make pipe and tubing insulation. Gordan Hart, consulting engineer, Artek, Inc. and also the secretary of Subcommittee C16.94 on Insulation Terminology said that by using this standard, the specifiers and owners can be assured that they are getting a good thermal performance from their cellular glass by limiting the number of pieces that can be used to fabricate the sections annexure in the current edition of ASTM standard C 552 forms the basis for standard C 1639. Now that C 1639 is a fabrication standard it will be removed from C 552 and will become a material standard. The Subcommittee C 16.40 is open to suggestions for new standards which could help in development in the area of mechanical insulation systems.
