The technique of the prestressed steel jacket (PSJ) reinforced RC circular piers was proposed, based on the six RC circular piers retrofitted with PSJ tested under axial compression to verify the feasibility and the reinforcement effect of PSJ strengthening RC piers. The compress resistant mechanism of PSJ and the compress bearing capacity of retrofitted piers were discussed by analyzing prestressing level of PSJ (α) and configuration parameter of PSJ (η). Based on experimental study, a formula was suggested to calculate the compress bearing capacity of the retrofitted piers. The results indicate that compressive strength of retrofitted pier is enhanced effectively and the ductility of the columns is improved significantly. The experimental and analytical results will provide references for strengthening design of exiting pier. ©, 2015, Central South University of Technology. All right reserved.
