摘要
Workers involved in carrying out environmental remediation of the US Department of Energy's Hanford river corridor make significant efforts and face challenges to perform their task. The efforts of the workers has resulted in a large number of surplus facilities being demolished and waste sites cleaned up. It is also found that more than 8 million tons of contaminated material have been removed from the Columbia River Corridor into permanent disposal at Hanford's Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility. Materials that have been removed from waste sites can include used reactor hardware, equipment, and protective clothing. The main burial ground at each reactor site has also yielded highly radioactive materials, such as spent fuel and reactor thermocouple wiring. Workers involved in clean up efforts have to take significant measures to avoid disasters and overcome the challenges involved in such efforts.
