In order to investigate the influence of wall panel openings on the lateral force resistant capacity of stiffened steel plate shear walls, elasto-plastic beam-shell mixed single-story wall panel models of stiffened steel plate shear walls with opennings were firstly developed in order to find the critical factors dominating the shear strength of stiffened wall panels with openning. Furthermore, Extensive numerical calculation and parametric analysis were conducted to derive the simplified formulae of shear strength reduction coefficient of stiffened wall panels with opening. The predictions obtained using the proposed formulae agree well with the FEA results. In addition, on the basis of experimental research on three stiffened steel plate shear walls under low-cycle reversed load, refined elasto-plastic finite element models of three specimens were developed for further structural analysis. The experimental results are in good agreements with the FEA results. Finally, the design method for calculating the lateral force resistant capacity of stiffened steel plate shear walls was proposed. Good agreements can be observed, and the proposed method is helpful for the routine design practice.
