Effects of stearic acid on rheology and crystallization of nano-ZnO filled polypropylene

In order to provide theoretical supports for process and property optimization of nano-ZnO/polypropylene (PP) composites, a series of nano-ZnO/PP composites were prepared by melt blending methods. The structure and properties of the nano-ZnO/PP composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), rotational rheometer, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the effect of stearic acid addition on microstructure, rheology and crystallization was studied. The results show that when the mass fraction of nano-ZnO is less than 5%, good particle dispersion can be obtained and the melt viscosity of the composite decreases when the nano-ZnO mass fraction increases. However, when this value is greater than 10%, the melt viscosity increases with the increase of nano-ZnO mass fraction due to nano-ZnO agglomeration. The addition of stearic acid enhances the interfacial interaction between nano-ZnO particles and PP matrix, which improves the dispersion of nano-ZnO particles. When the mass fraction of nano-ZnO is less than 5%, these particles have little effect on PP crystallzation, but they play the role of heterogeneous nucleating agents when agglomeration happens. The addition of stearic acid can effectively inhibit the transition of PP from β-crystal to α-crystal during heating processes. The agglomeration of nano-ZnO particles has an inhibitory effect on the formation of β-crystal. © 2016, Editorial Board of “Journal of Chemical Engineering of Chinese Universities”.
