In Europe, the transportation of trucks on trains develops very slowly despite an ever growing public awareness of the road safety problems, especially in tunnels. The current stagnation status can be changed by implementing a new side-loading technology that has been developed by the Modalohr company (France). The new technology offers a more flexible access for road carriers. In 2003, that innovation will be applied to the transalpine traffic between France and Italy.
