In Japan, the installation of small wastewater treatment plants has intensified during the last two decades. A fairly wide range of technologies suitable for small-scale sewage treatment have been developed. Design, operation and maintenance guidelines have been established. This paper highlights the technical features of different categories of small wastewater treatment plants implemented mainly in rural areas of Japan. Operation, maintenance and sludge treatment are also briefly discussed. Experience shows that for very small-scale wastewater treatment, prefabricated septic tanks/anaerobic filters with contact aeration are suitable, while for larger scales, the oxidation ditch, sequencing batch reactor(SBR) and intermittent aeration processes are promising.
