Cloud computing is being implemented in many of present day's leading companies to cut costs; grow systems inexpensively; and gain nearly instant access to the latest technologies. Cloud computing is distributed computing in which the provider supplies the computing infrastructure including computers; software and data storage. Subscribers pay for the use of this infrastructure on a monthly basis; as opposed to making large upfront investments for in-house computing hardware and software. Water and wastewater utilities rely on their SCADA systems to manage their operations remotely and in real time. It can greatly reduce the costs associated with buying; implementing; replacing; and managing hardware and software. Using a cloud computing platform enables water and wastewater utilities to use redundancy and disaster recovery capabilities far beyond those in the typical utility IT departments;
