Measurement-induced squeezing of a Bose-Einstein condensate

The theory of open quantum systems to include the back-action of a nondemolitive measurement was applied into the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate. It was shown that dispersive imaging with a sufficiently high laser intensity results in number squeezing of the condensate state. Such a prediction can be tested in present-day experiments and could result in a significant improvement toward the implementation of Heisenberg-limited atom interferometry, and in a more general understanding of the backaction of other quantum-limited devices.
