It has been more than two decades since the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) last conducted a consensus study on the inputs, fates, and effects of petroleum-based hydrocarbon mixtures in the sea and 14 years since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill devastated the Gulf of Mexico.
