Integrating overviews for a hybrid future

Various aspects of the Semiconductor '2k' conference organized by JEMI, at Edinburgh, are discussed. An important inclusion in the conference was the characteristics of III-V compounds as well as silicon matters. The strong growth expected to take place in thin silicon on insulator (SOI) as used in CMOS, thick SOI of material importance in power devices and MEMS were analyzed. It is found that while SiC is limited by the main manufacturer pricing, GaN has been growing with strong momentum while new material and component manufacturers are emerging.
