A closed-circuit ground coupled heat pump (GCHP) experimental system was constructed at an ecological residence estate in Tianjin. Experimental study was carried out on U-vertical underground heat exchanger by different back filler material, i.e. U-vertical pile tube and U-vertical tube ground heat exchanger in heat extraction and heat rejection modes in the GCHP system. The effect and performance of heat exchange of these two types of underground heat exchanger were analyzed. The influences of U-vertical pile ground heat exchanger on the temperature distribution of underground field in heat extraction and heat rejection modes were analyzed, and the thermal affecting radius to ground was derived in the continual short-term operation mode.
