The communications network (originally installed by Marconi) which carries Malaysia's web-based national command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) system has been updated with fiber optics and some satellite links. This upgrade has allowed the system to be extended down to all army brigade headquarters, as well as to air and naval bases. The C4I system, produced by local firm Systems Consultancy Services (SCS - see IDR 05/02), has also been successfully trialed at sea and work is in hand to develop this aspect. Progress will depend on budgetary pressures. An SCS spokesman told IDR that the company intends to demonstrate the system to Thailand soon. A tactical battle management system (BMS), using the same IP backbone, has also been developed from the system in anticipation of a likely Malaysian army requirement for a BMS in the next procurement plan, RM9, which starts in 2006. A concept demonstrator was on display at DSA 2004 in Kuala Lumpur in April. © 2005 Jane's Information Group. All rights reserved.
