Collagen, an animal protein, is a highly versatile biomaterial. Understanding the intrinsic biological and physiochemical properties of collagen has contributed to its effective use in various medical products and has enhanced the medical application of collagen-based biomaterials. Collagen has been used in a wide range of biomedical applications but mainly in drug delivery systems and in the field of tissue repair. This review focuses on some of the main biomedical applications of collagen. © 2010 ASABE ISSN 1934-2799.
