Fast and effective intra-frame coding algorithm for H. 264/AVC

The H. 264/AVC improves the coding performance by employing the rate distortion optimization(RDO) in intra-frame coding. To achieve the optimal effect, all of the intra prediction modes are calculated, so the computational complexity increases dramatically. In order to reduce the coding time, a fast and effective intra-frame coding algorithm is proposed. The direction error strengths of texture are computed to reduce the number of the prediction modes, and an early termination criterion for early detecting zero-block is proposed to accelerate the coding process. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the encoding time by about 67.2% without sacrifice in terms of video quality and bit rates.
