Effects of tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) on dimerization selectivity of isobutene were investigated over strong acid cation exchange resin catalyst in an autoclave. The selectivity-enhancing mechanism for formation of DIB was discussed by comparing the experimental results for the dimerization of isobutene in absence of TBA with the results in presence of TBA. The conversion of IB was about 60% and the selectivity to DIB was no less than 80% after 3.5 h reaction at 90°C and 750 r/min when TBA and IB mass fraction in raw material were 0.6% and 17%-20% respectively.
