The various steps in discovering new bioactive natural products are illustrated with examples from New Zealand's unique native plants. This work is not restricted to the usual vascular plants, but extends to liverworts and lichens. Fungicidal, herbicidal, insecticidal and nematicidal compounds are described. The bioactivity-directed isolation and structure elucidation processes are detailed for two examples: a chlorinated fungicidal compound from a lichen; and a new insecticidal epoxy-ether from a liverwort.
