A quantum electrodynamics (QED) approach, for the calculation of the nuclear spin-spin coupling tensor of nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, was discussed. A generalization of time-dependent response theory was used to obtain an effective spin-spin interaction from the coupling of nuclear magnetic moments to a virtual quantized magnetic field. The analysis showed that the energy-dependent operators obtained were reduced to usual classical-field expressions at suitable limits.
