Donations to colleges decline for the first time since 1988

Contributions to higher education decreased in the 2002 fiscal year for the first time since 1998. A survey found that drop in alumni giving was the biggest factor. Despite the drop in 2002, total giving was still more than double the amount raised nine years earlier. Gifts from foundations surpassed those from alumni for the first time in more than 25 years.
