World's first diesel-electric LNG carrier

The news that Gaz de France is to build the world's first diesel-electric powered liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier created a ripple of excitement in the marine engineering community. With four dual-fuel diesels providing all the LNG carrier's propulsion and electrical needs, fuel consumption in comparison to traditional steam-powered vessels is reduced. The diesel-electric arrangement eliminates the need for electric generators to power the ship and will enhance reliability as well as permit machinery outage for maintenance at sea.
