Supervisory control is typically based on a global assessment of the current operation point. The models used for solving supervision tasks have to describe the dynamical system under consideration at the same level of abstraction. The paper surveys the motivation for using qualitative models, describes two forms of such models and shows that supervision tasks can be solved by means of qualitative models.
