The basic tools for the emerging field of attosecond atomic spectroscopy are discussed. The attosecond sampling system used for the measurement of x-ray pulse duration might be able to provide insight into atomic electron dynamics without any major modification. From the measured temporal structure of the photoelectron wave packet the x-ray pulse duration can be determined.
