A change in the food and drug administration (FDA) approval system for the end-use of packaging materials and the plastics additives in food packaging are discussed. The new food contact notification (FCN) system includes the additive level, usage temperature and type of food the substance contacts. A change in the trends of slips, antistats, antioxidants, colorants, antifogs and oxygen scavangers is also reported by the FDA. Ciba specialty chemicals (CO) is working with the FDA to develop a protocol which will allow the notification clearance of additives used in the irradiation process.
