On the relation between static-strength and fatigue-life distributions of composite materials

In order to verify the Strength Life Equal Rank Assumption (SLERA), a batch of specimens made of [0/45/90/-45]2S graphite/epoxy composite laminates has been tested. The relation between the fatigue life distribution and the static strength distribution of these tested specimens is investigated in the present study. It is found that SLERA is valid and a simple S-N relationship exists for the tested fatigue specimens. Based on SLERA and the S-N relationship, combined with the static strength distribution of the material known in advance, formulas are derived and proposed for the prediction of the fatigue life distribution. Experimental data as well as simulation data confirm that the proposed formulas can be used to predict the fatigue life distribution of the composite materials very well.
