Algorithm for fault-tolerant topology control in heterogeneous and multi-hop wireless sensor networks

Heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (HWSN) is a more practical network model because of an improved network performance such as a shorter data-gathering delay and lower network energy consumption. The k fault-tolerant topology control is a kind of NP-hard problem in the HWSN. The paper designs an approach of constructing network reduced graphs based on comprehensive analysis on the network model of HWSN. And the k-fault-tolerant distributed topology control (k-FTDTC) algorithm is proposed based on the ordered reachable neighborhood which is used to restrict the maximum transmission power of the nodes, with the objective of minimizing the total power consumption and preserving k-vertex fault-tolerant property. The experimental results indicate that the k-FTDTC algorithm not only reduces the computational complexity and improves network robustness, but also reduces the total network power consumption and the maximum node power consumption, as compared with the distributed adaptive topology control (DATC) algorithm. ©, 2015, Chinese Institute of Electronics.
