The Use of SIP in Communications Networks

The ITU's H.323 standard forms the basis of most current IP telephony networks. However, the IETF's session initiation protocol (SIP) has been recognised by a growing number of people as a slimmer, smarter way to do IP telephony. Now, at last, SIP is ready for prime time, with an increasing number of robust, carrier-grade products based on SIP coming to market. Although there are issues remaining to be resolved, SIP now looks firmly set on course to supplant H.323 as the predominant IP telephony technology. In this article we review the current state of SIP, and look at some examples of how leading-edge players are using the protocol to provide innovative products and services.
