In 2001, the economic climate in Germany slumped more than was expected. The graphic-art industry was also affected. The very unfavorable market situation, a significant decline in advertising and a decrease in exports (by 8.8% compared to the previous year) resulted in 4% lower revenue. On the other hand, stronger competition pushed down printed matter prices while paper became more expensive. In fact, German printers were handicapped by a 6% increase in paper prices.
