Characterizing cluster formation in wireless sensor networks: A chaos particle swarm optimization approach

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the lifespan of the network is one of the most significant metrics need to be optimized. Clustering is a firmly-established technique for prolonging the network lifetime. Despite various clustering protocols have been developed, but many of the protocols existing either fail to consider various factors comprehensively. In this paper, we proposed an energy-efficient chaos particle swarm optimization (CPSO)-based clustering protocol that characterizing the cluster with: AMRP (average minimum reachable power), CHEA (cluster head energy assessment), CHUA (cluster head uniformity assessment), which comprehensively considered the intra and inter cluster energy consumption, residual energy of cluster heads (CHs) as well as the uniformity of the distribution of CHs. In addition, by incorporating chaos into standard PSO, the premature phenomenon of PSO can be avoided effectively. Comparisons has been carried out between our suggest protocol and LEACH, LEACH-C, standard PSO clustering.
