The principles of packet switching were developed in the 1960s by Paul Baran in the USA and Donald Davies in the UK [1]. Ed Smith explores how the technology and architecture of how Tymnet, one of the earliest packet switching networks, came in to being, its acquisition by BT and its lasting impact on BT's managed networking propositions.
