A record 10.87 million tons of scrap paper was exported by the U.S traders in 2000. The prices continued to fall to the lowest value for six straight month, hitting lowest value during december 2000. China emerged as the fastest growing influence on the market. It was the 2nd largest market for scrap paper in 2000. Mixed paper was the most-traded grade of scrap paper due to the demands from China. The overall exports surpassed the exports of1999 by more than 27%, beating the record of 10.4 million tonnes set in 1995.
