The electricity market reform and construction in China brings challenges to the development of ancillary service mechanism. In this process, the experiences of foreign ancillary markets should be taken as references. At present, the ancillary market in the United Kingdom (UK), which is independent of its energy market, is a valuable reference for Chinese current electricity market. Therefore, this paper focuses on the operation and payment mechanisms of short-term operation reserve (STOR) service, a typical ancillary service in the UK ancillary market, to get inspiration about the development and construction of ancillary market in China. © 2018 Automation of Electric Power Systems Press.
