The DoD has been recommended by the Pentagon to close 33 US military installations including a number of military R&D centers. Pentagon consider these closings necessary to increase efficiency through consolidation and these closings would put thousands of civilian engineering jobs at stake. One of the centers on the closings list is Fort Monmouth in New Jersey, which has been tbe Army's primary facility for developing communications and other electronic systems since World War II. Pentagon plans to shift Fort Monmouth projects and technical jobs to the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. According to the DoD, these closings would result in $5.5 billion in recurring savings and a net savings of $48.8 billion over 20 years.
