Elevated temperature oxidation resistance of FeCrNiNbBSiMo coating by high velocity arc spraying

FeCrNiNbBSiMo coating was fabricated on cylindrical AISI 20 steel substrate by high velocity arc spraying process. The elevated temperature oxidation resistance and microstructure of the coatings were studied by means of optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and compared with FeCrNiBSiMo coating and AISI 20 steel. The results indicate that the elevated temperature oxidation resistance of FeCrNiNbBSiMo coating is much better than that of the FeCrNiBSiMo coating and AISI 20 steel. The mass gain of FeCrNiNbBSiMo coating is 79% of FeCrNiBSiMo coating and 1/30 of AISI 20 steel, respectively. It is shown that the addition of Nb can make the coating more compact and improve the high temperature oxidation resistance.
