Barrier solution for packaging papers: Development of a new fluorocarbon-free additive for the production of oil-proof and greaseproof packaging papers

There are a number of reasons why one should be concerned with new ways of attaining oil and grease densities. Halogenated chemical additives come under increasing pressure on the part of government authorities, NGOs, but also public perception. Laminates are more difficult to recycle and have the cost disadvantage of a separate processing step. Aqueous polymer solutions have a low dry matter content and a rather low barrier effect. Particularly, the possibility of tapping into new market segments with the existing application technology, drives the interest in new additives for oil and grease barriers.
