Sm-doped TiO2 films and photocatalytic properties in treatment of pesticide-polluted water

A novel technique was developed to improve the photo-catalytic properties of the TiO2 films in treating the pesticide-polluted water. In the technique, the Sm-doped TiO2 films were deposited by sol-gel process on glass substrates;and the microstructures were characterized with X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The influence of the deposition conditions, including Sm content, sintering temperature and annealing time, on pesticide degradation was studied. The results show that the Sm-doped TiO2 films significantly enhance the photo-catalytic activity in degradation of pesticides, and that the optimized photo-catalyst can be obtained under the conditions, including dipping into the sol for three times, a Sm content of 0.3%, and a sintering for 2 h at 500~550°C. High degradation rate of Rogor under the irradiation of sunlight shows that the Sm-doped TiO2 film has high photo-catalytic activity. The activation mechanism of Sm was also tentatively discussed.
