In this paper; we proposed an optical reconstruction approach by use of a new type of light field display device(LFDD) with a directional diffuser. The directional diffuser can improve imaging quality of the traditional light field display device. Special ray casting algorithm is applied to render the medical volume data in real time for LFDD. Four different kinds of medical data have been applied for testing the validity of the algorithm and better results have been achieved. The experimental results shows that the number of LFDD's viewpoints can reach 90 × 90 with 40 degree× 40 degree viewing angle; and the rendering efficiency can reach 30–40 fps for common medial volume data. © 2024;
