Evaluation of the OxyVerTM analysis method and the effects of sample preservation on chemical oxygen demand (COD)

Three different analysis methods for the determination of chemical oxygen demand (COD) are evaluated. The open reflux and closed reflux methods utilized potassium dichromate as the chemical oxidant, while OxyVerTM method utilized manganese as the oxidant. Each method was tested using potassium acid phthalate solutions. Results indicated that OxyVerTM method showed the greatest error while the other two methods gave accurate results. The open reflux and closed reflux methods showed greater accuracy than the OxyVerTM method when applied to effluent and in-plant samples.
