Combined three-dimensional flow-and temperature field measurements using digital light field photography

The recent developments in the field of light field imaging allow for new approaches to the experimental characterization of three-dimensional flow phenomena. With the light field imaging technique; a single camera is able to capture an object's position in all three spatial dimensions. This possibly simplifies the setup and calibration of particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments in comparison to state of the art methods like tomographic PIV or holographic PIV. In order to explore the capabilities of light field PIV; a three-dimensional convection problem is investigated as a test case. The three-dimensional flow and temperature field; essential for the characterization of complex heat transfer mechanisms; can be measured simultaneously by using thermometric liquid crystals as tracer particles. The present work shows first results of the application of the introduced measurement technique; combining particle image velocimetry and liquid crystal thermometry (LCT) on the basis of light field imaging;
