In August 2000 a new minimill for long specialty steel products with a capacity of 500 000 t/a was commissioned at ABS Acciaierie Bertoli Safau in Udine/Italy. This is the first plant to realize a fully continuous process of casting, rolling, annealing, testing, straightening, shotblasting, finishing and bundling. The combined process of casting and rolling is called ECR - Endless Casting Rolling. The design of the whole line has been focused on highest yield and reliability. Therefore, one of its new developments is a caster with a cartridge-type system for automatic quick retraction and replacement of the complete casting segment.
