Surface modification treatment was conducted at 420 °C by vacuum solid diffusion aluminizing on AZ91D magnesium alloy. The microstructure, corrosion resistance and micro-hardness of the aluminized coating were examined. The electrochemical corrosion polarization curves of the alloy were measured before and after aluminizing. The results show that the aluminized coating on AZ91D magnesium alloy is uniform and dense. The coating is composed of Al3Mg2-based outer layer, β-Mg17Al12 layer, and β-Mg17Al12-based (β-Mg17Al12+α-Mg) dual-phase layer. For AZ91D magnesium alloy, this coating obviously improves its corrosion resistance in 5 wt % NaCl solution and micro-hardness HV (up to 1600-1800 MPa).
