The possible approaches for the cross direction (CD) control for a dual headbox were investigated. A Matlab and Simulink model of a dual headbox paper machine was used to analyze a model for model predictive control (MPC). Wet end and dry end array sensors were evaluated with respect to the required CD variations. The control CD basis weight variation during sustained disturbances was first analyzed. The performance of various MPC control formulations with respect to parameters such as shrinkage, wet-ends and dry-ends were also reported.
