Optical properties of SrB6O10:RE (RE=Eu3+, Tb3+) under vacuum ultraviolet excitation

Rare earth ions (Eu3+ or Tb3+) doped SrB6O10 phosphors were prepared by sol-gel method. Their photoluminescence properties under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation were evaluated. In the excitation spectra, a strong absorption band of the host lattice was observed in the VUV region. It indicates that SrB6O10:RE (RE=Eu3+, Tb3+) have better luminescence performance under VUV excitation. The quenching concentrations are 30% for SrB6O10:Eu3+ and 25% for SrB6O10:Tb3+, respectively. SrB6O10:Eu3+ shows better color saturation than commercial red phosphor (Y,Gd)BO3:Eu3+ (KX-504A), and SrB6O10:Tb3+ has shorter decay time than commercial phosphor Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ (KX-502). © 2016, Editorial Department of Journal of the Chinese Ceramic Society.
