Determination of kappa number reduction in pulp and COD in bleach plant effluents using multiwavelength spectrometry and multivariate calibration

摘要
We propose a method for the simultaneous determination of kappa number reduction in pulp over a bleaching stage and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in bleach plant effluents, using multiwave-length spectrometry on the effluent and multivariate calibration. A model for kappa number reduction, based on ultraviolet (UV) spectra from a flow system, gave a mean prediction error of 0.24 K units. Models for COD gave relative errors of 2.8%-3.7% and 6%-8%, for the UV and visible/near infrared region (manual measurements), respectively. These prediction errors are similar to those expected from the manual reference measurements.
