North American newsprint and directory machines were upgraded to increase efficiency and produce uncoated groundwood grades using opticoncept technology. Optiload calenders were installed and upgraded at Irving paper and Stora Enso mills. Shoe nip calendering resulted in bulk-saving benefits for newsprint and directory grades. Soft-nip calendering was better than hard nip technique to obtain uniform paper, good printability and runability. A hot soft calender called Optisoft Slimline was developed for rebuilt applications.
