Experimental study on bearing performance of concrete beams with circular openings after high temperature

During the building decoration, circular openings may be created on reinforced concrete (RC) beams due to pipe laying. To study the influence of circular openings on the bearing performance of RC beams after high temperature, the flexural behavior of ten RC beams and the shear behavior of five RC beams was tested. The effects of experienced high temperature and diameter of the circular opening on the failure mode, flexural and shear strength, load-deflection curve, strain distribution and development of RC beams were investigated. The finite element analysis (FEA) software ABAQUS was utilized for numerical simulation. Results show that the flexural strength of RC solid-web beams with experienced fire temperature of 100℃, 300℃ and 500℃ is reduced by 9. 6%, 7. 4% and 12. 5% than that at room temperature, respectively. Within the scope of test parameters, the drilling and diameter of the circular opening have little influence on the flexural strength of RC beams. The shear strength of the RC beam with the circular opening is 22. 6% lower than that without the opening at room temperature. The shear strength of RC beams with the circular opening is closely related to the strength of concrete after high temperatures (100-500 ℃) and the experienced high temperature has little effect on the shear strength of RC beams. In general, the FEA simulation can better calculate the flexural and shear strength of the specimen, and the results of the FEA simulation can reasonably reflect the influence of the experienced high temperature and the circular opening on the bearing capacity of RC beams, to overcome the law distortion caused by the discreteness of tests. A calculation was proposed to calculate the flexural and shear strength of RC beams with circular openings after high temperature, which has good accuracy within the scope of experimental parameters and can be used to evaluate the bearing capacity of such RC beams. © 2023 Science Press.
