In the context of CPPS, production planer can develop modular, scalable manufacturing cells considering different levels of automation. However, evaluating these alternatives for cell configuration is laborious due to diverse influences in customized mass production. Therefore, the paper presents a simulation-based modeling and evaluation approach. As a core element in the proposed methodology, an agent-based simulation model is introduced. © 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston, Germany.
