Key scientific and technological problems of petroleum exploration and development in deep and ultra-deep formation

The rapid development of deep and ultra-deep hydrocarbon exploration has positioned China as a major player in onshore deep to ultra-deep petroleum exploration and production. Currently, China̍s oil and gas exploration has entered a historical stage characterized by “deep formations, deep water, and unconventional”. Deep and ultra-deep oil and gas reservoirs hold immense potential and are of critical importance for the future development of China's petroleum industry. To address the challenges and opportunities presented by these resources, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the scientific and technological issues related to deep to ultra-deep oil and gas exploration and development. This work reviews the successful endeavors of deep to ultra-deep exploration in China and proposes research directions that encompass both geological science and engineering technology. Geological science directions: Deep to ultra-deep reservoir characteristics; Geological types of exploration targets; Formation mechanism and types of oil and gas reservoirs; structural deformation and geo-mechanics, rock mechanics mechanism; Characteristics of ultra-deep fluid and fluid solid interaction; Characteristics and evaluation methods of ultra-deep oil and gas resources. Engineering issues: The large-scale drilling rig capable of reaching depths of 10 000 meters or more; Research and development of geophysical exploration equipment capable of operating at depths ranging from 6 to 12 km; High-temperature and pressure logging technology development; Research and development of deep to ultra-deep fracturing technology and equipment. © 2023 University of Petroleum, China.
