Surface plasmon resonance of metal nanostructures has become an indispensable tool in many fields. However, the plasmon-enhanced localized electric-field that enables those applications may cause local heating simultaneously, known as photothermal effect. Here, the photothermal response of metal nanostructures coated on fiber-based SPR sensor was investigated for the first time. The reflective resonance mode of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor was found shifted due to metal heating, and the temperature increase was determined both experimentally and computationally. It demonstrated that the heat generated by metal nanostructures was not negligible, which may cause undesired measurement error in SPR based sensor. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.
